The risk
Why radon matters in Wisconsin
Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from uranium in the soil and rock under a home. You can't see it, smell it or taste it. It seeps in through cracks, gaps around pipes, sump pits and crawl spaces, and it builds up most in basements and lower floors.
The only way to know your home's level is to test.

The fix
What is a radon mitigation system?
Most Wisconsin homes with basements are fixed with a system called sub-slab depressurization. A contractor drills a hole through the basement floor, connects a sealed pipe and adds a quiet in-line fan. The fan pulls radon from under the slab and vents it above the roof, where it spreads out harmlessly. Cracks and openings are sealed, and a simple gauge on the pipe shows the system is working.
A typical install takes about a day. Afterward, you retest to confirm the level dropped.
What radon level needs fixing?
The EPA recommends fixing your home if radon is 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) or higher, and suggests considering it between 2 and 4 pCi/L. Not sure what your number means? Read our radon testing guide.
