How Much Does Radon Mitigation Cost in Wisconsin?
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services says a contractor-installed radon system typically costs about $1,000 to $2,000. Your price depends on how your home is built. These are general ranges, not a quote. The only way to know your cost is to have a certified contractor look at your home.
What changes the price
- Foundation type. A basement with a poured concrete floor is usually the most straightforward. Crawl spaces, slab-on-grade homes and mixed foundations can take more work.
- Crawl spaces. A dirt or gravel crawl space usually needs a sealed plastic barrier with suction underneath, which adds materials and labor.
- Sump pit. An open sump pit may need a sealed, airtight cover. Sometimes the pit can be used as the suction point.
- Finished basement. Finished walls and ceilings make it harder to run the pipe, so it may need to go through a closet or outside the house.
- Fan and pipe route. Running the pipe up through the garage or attic, or up the outside wall, changes the time and parts needed.
- Number of suction points. Larger homes, or soil under the slab that doesn't let air move well, can need more than one.
Running costs after the install
The fan runs all the time, so it adds a little to your electric bill. Most radon fans are small and use about as much power as a light bulb or two. Fans usually last several years before they need to be replaced. In a cold climate like ours, a system may also pull a small amount of heated air from the house.
Don't skip the follow-up test
After the system is installed, test again to make sure the level dropped. Many contractors include a post-mitigation test or explain how to do one. Ask about it when you get your quote.
Questions to ask before you hire
- Are you certified by NRPP or NRSB? (Wisconsin doesn't license radon contractors, so certification is how you check training.)
- What's included: sealing, the gauge, a fan warranty, post-mitigation testing?
- Where will the pipe and fan go, and how will it look outside?
- What happens if the follow-up test is still high?

Frequently asked questions
Why do radon quotes vary so much?
Each home is different. The foundation, how the pipe can be routed and how air moves under the slab all change the work involved.
Is radon mitigation worth the cost?
For a home at or above 4 pCi/L, the EPA recommends fixing it to lower your long-term lung cancer risk. A working system can also help when you sell.
Can I install a radon system myself?
Some people do, but a certified contractor knows how to size the fan, seal the right openings and confirm the system works. A poor install may not lower the level enough.
