Radon in Milwaukee homes

Milwaukee has some of the oldest housing in Wisconsin: bungalows, duplexes, Cape Cods and two-story homes built from the late 1800s through the middle 1900s. Many have fieldstone, brick or block foundations, floor drains and patched basement floors, which give soil gas more ways in. Newer homes and condos can test high too. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services estimates about 1 in 10 homes in the state has elevated radon, and the only way to know about yours is to test.

Older foundations and radon systems

Most Milwaukee homes with a concrete basement floor can use a standard sub-slab system: a sealed pipe through the floor and a fan that vents radon above the roof. Stone or brick foundation walls can leak more air, so the contractor may spend more time sealing, and some older homes with dirt or partial floors need a sealed membrane first. Duplexes usually share one basement, so one system often covers both units.

Frequently asked questions

Do old Milwaukee homes with stone foundations need a different radon system?

Usually the same kind of system works, but stone and brick walls may need more sealing. The contractor will check your basement before quoting.

I rent in Milwaukee. Can I get radon fixed?

You can test, and then talk with your landlord about fixing a high result. The owner usually arranges and pays for a mitigation system.

How soon can a Milwaukee home get a radon system?

Once a contractor visits and you agree on the plan, most installs take about a day.
