Is Radon a Problem in Northwest Wisconsin Homes?
Often, yes. In state test data, about 58% of tests in Hudson's ZIP code and 64% in New Richmond's were at or above 4 pCi/L, the level where EPA recommends fixing a home. Send a free quote request and we'll look for one radon mitigation contractor certified by NRPP or NRSB who serves St. Croix, Polk, Pierce, Dunn or Barron County. If one can take it, they contact you. You're never obligated to hire them.

One region, very different homes
The five counties along the St. Croix and Red Cedar rivers mix fast-growing commuter towns near the Twin Cities, college towns, lake country and farmland. A new two-story in Hudson, a 1920s farmhouse outside Ellsworth and a lake cabin near Balsam Lake or Chetek all sit on the ground differently, so the right radon fix differs too. A test on your own home is what tells you whether you need one.
Moving from Minnesota?
Minnesota's building code has called for radon-resistant features in new homes for years. Wisconsin's statewide code doesn't, so a newer home on this side of the river may have no passive radon pipe at all. Test before you assume the house was built with one.
Private wells and cabins
Many homes here are on private wells, and many seasonal places have crawl spaces or slabs instead of full basements. Radon can be in well water too, and crawl spaces can be fixed with a sealed plastic cover and a fan. Ask the contractor about both.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I get a cheap radon test kit?
Wisconsin's regional Radon Information Centers sell reduced-cost kits. Find the one for your county on the DHS Radon Information Centers page.
Is winter a good time to test?
Yes. Closed windows and a running furnace make winter a good time for a short-term test, as long as you follow the kit's directions.
Do you install radon systems?
No. We're a free referral service. We pass your request to one independent certified contractor who serves your area, if one can take it.
