Do St. Croix County Homes Have High Radon?

Many do. On the Wisconsin Department of Health Services radon map, 714 of 1,230 tests in Hudson's ZIP code, 54016, were at or above 4 pCi/L (about 58%), and 341 of 530 in New Richmond's ZIP, 54017 (about 64%). 4 pCi/L is the level where EPA recommends fixing your home. Radon and St. Croix County homes

St. Croix County is one of Wisconsin's fastest-growing counties, with commuters crossing the river on I-94 to the Twin Cities. Hudson and New Richmond have added whole subdivisions of newer homes, most with full basements, beside older downtown houses and farmsteads around Baldwin, Glenwood City and Somerset. Somerset's ZIP, 54025, had 82 of 176 tests at or above 4 pCi/L.

Newer homes and passive pipes

Minnesota's code calls for radon-resistant features in new homes, but Wisconsin's statewide code doesn't, so a new St. Croix County home may have no radon pipe. If yours does have a passive pipe and still tests high, a certified contractor can often add a fan to it.

Basements and finished lower levels

Most homes here have basements, and many walkout lower levels are finished as living space. The contractor usually drills one suction hole in the slab and runs the pipe through the garage or a utility room, so it stays out of sight.

Frequently asked questions

Should I test a home I'm buying in Hudson?

It's a good idea. Testing isn't required by law, but many buyers add a radon test to the inspection. See our guide to radon when buying or selling.

Can a new home have high radon?

Yes. Radon depends on the soil and how air moves through the house, not the home's age.

How long does an install take?

A typical system is installed in about a day. Retest afterward to confirm the level dropped.
